Battle Arena Toshinden 3 rebuilds the series on a new engine with a roster that jumps to thirty-two fighters, and closes off its once-open arenas entirely, enabling wall and ceiling juggling combos the earlier games couldn't support. New limited-use special attacks called soul bombs and a reworked combo system sit alongside one of the era's earliest Performance versus Quality display options, trading frame rate for detail or vice versa.
