Star Ocean: The Second Story lets players choose between two protagonists, Claude or Rena, at the very start, subtly reshaping the opening hours and eventually branching into over eighty possible endings depending on party composition and relationship choices made along the way. Combat runs in real time on open battlefields rather than a grid, and side systems for item creation, private actions between party members and skill development give the adventure unusual depth for its era.
