The King of Fighters '98 is widely regarded as the finest entry in SNK's team fighting series, largely because it dropped the story entirely and concentrated on balance. You assemble three fighters from an enormous roster drawn from every previous game, choosing between two defensive systems, and matches are decided by careful use of meter, short hops and the ability to read an opponent's approach. Decades later it is still played competitively.
